ALPACA – WORLDS FINEST WOOL
Alpacas live naturally in the Peruvian Andes Mountains. With a population of approximately 4 million, 70% of the world’s alpaca live in the mountains of Peru, Ethnic shepard families sustainably herd the alpacas in the Cordillera mountains, where the animals roam free in their natural environment. These farmers make their living out of herding and keeping alpacas for their wool, tending their herds using time-honored methods for hundreds of years. The hair of these animals can be very fine, as low as 17/19 microns on a newly born, though the bulk when shorn tends to be 21/23 microns.
Alpaca wool is of extremely high quality, and one of the most exclusive fibers in the world. The Incas used to call alpaca fiber “Gods wool” The natural habitat of alpacas is in the highlands of the Peruvian Andes. The alpaca fiber is a soft, durable, luxurious and silky natural fiber. Especially baby alpaca fibre, which is taken from alpacas in their first year of life, has a special luxury feel. While similar to sheep’s wool, it is much warmer, up to 7 times warmer than sheep wool and more resistant than Merino wool and cashmere. It’s not prickly, it is naturally water-repellent and odor resistant. Alpaca fiber doesn’t contain lanolin, so it is not itchy and does not create allergies, which makes it hypoallergenic. And because of the lack of lanolin, it makes the alpaca processing process much more environmentally friendly because virtually no chemical cleaning products are needed. Alpaca comes in 22 natural colors or shades. They go from white to dark black passing through different kinds of browns and gray. This is a characteristic which cannot be found in any other natural ‘noble’ fibers used in textile manufacturing.
Softness – Alpaca wool fibers are silky soft, comparible to, some even softer than cashmere wool. Especially the yarns made from baby alpaca and Vicuña are well known for it’s softness. Compared to sheep wool, it gives a much softer, sensory experience. Ideal for creating huggable fashion apparel.
Warmth – Alpaca clothing is adaptable to every season. Alpaca fibres contain microscopic air pockets, providing great insulation and keeping warmth during the winter. These same air pockets also allow for outstanding breathability, thus keeping cool in the summer and giving the garment great versatility.
Weight – One reason alpaca wool is so versatile is because of its light weight, mostly 3x lighter in weight than sheep wool. Those same microscopic air pockets help to reduce the weight of alpaca fibres, making alpaca fabric almost as light as air. Alpaca’s minimal weight makes the fibre equally ideal for an elegant shawl to wear to a ceremony, a work cardigan, or a sweater to wear while cross-country skiing in February.
Strength – Alpaca wool fibres are fine, lightweight and silky. Yet this luxury fibre has great strength and durability thanks to it’s long fibers. Alpaca fibre lasts longer than most other luxury fibres, including wools, cashmere, and silk. With proper care, high quality alpaca apparel can be passed down through generations.
